About the Department

The English Department at Sadanam Kumaran College (SKC) was established in 2020 under the affiliation of the University of Calicut. Since its inception, the department has been committed to providing students with a holistic education in English language and literature. With an initial batch of nine students and seven dedicated faculty members, the department set out on a mission to nurture critical thinking, communication skills, and cultural awareness among students.

Vision and Mission

The department aspires to be a center of excellence for English studies, enriching both students and society through language, literature, and research. Its mission is to equip students with proficiency in English, analytical skills, and a deep appreciation of literary traditions, thereby fostering academic and professional growth.

Comprehensive Curriculum & Academic Structure

The BA English program at SKC covers various domains, including literature, creative writing, linguistics, and communication studies. The curriculum is well-structured, offering a total of 140 credits spread across:

• Common Courses (38 credits): Foundation courses in English language and literature.

• Core Courses (including electives & project work, 63 credits): Subjects such as literary criticism, linguistics, Indian Writing in English, and drama studies.

• Open Courses (3 credits each): Courses like Creative Writing, English for Competitive Exams, and Literary Appreciation offer flexibility.

• Complementary Courses (8 credits): Focus on oral and written communication to improve fluency and confidence.

• Electives: Specialized subjects such as Digital Literature, Shakespeare, and Translation Studies, allowing students to tailor their academic journey.

• Extra Credit Activities (4 credits): Involvement in seminars, workshops, and research projects to develop practical skills.

The program also encourages interdisciplinary learning by allowing students to minor in fields like Music, Social Work, Commerce, Management, and Computer Science. This broadens their knowledge and enhances their versatility in career prospects.

Growth and Enrollment Trends

The department has witnessed dynamic student enrollment trends since its establishment:

• 2020: 9 students enrolled in the inaugural BA English batch.

• 2021: Enrollment increased to 16 students.

• 2022: A slight decline to 14 students was observed.

• 2023: The student count rebounded to 16, showing stable interest in the program.

• The General English program also experienced significant growth:

• 2019: 213 students.

• 2020: Enrollment increased to 275 students.

• 2021: Reached 400 students at its peak, before stabilizing at 323 students later in the year.

These fluctuations highlight the department's resilience and the growing demand for English studies at SKC.
